A feature of the second Chilton Enduro, which was organised by the Racing 50 Club, at the Snetterton circuit, on Sunday7 May 1961, was the appearance of the Italian works Motom team.

As Motor Cycle News commented in its 10th of May issue: 'Glamour and prestige were  added to the meeting by the appearance of three Italian works machines from the Italian Motom factory complete with works mechanics and team manager - none other than Armando Ubbiali, brother of World Champion Carlo Ubbiali!'
The Motoms were ridden by British riders and one of them, piloted by Jim Pearson and Peter Inchley, led the race for many laps and set the fastest circuit lap record for the race at 56.26mph (90.52km/h) before retiring with a suspected broken valve. 
On the  12 Feb 2003 Peter Inchely sadly passed away. Peter who was a TT rider in the 60s, was also the developer of the Hi_Tac Suzukis which were ridden by Barry Sheene. It is notable that Derek Minter and Peter Inchley took a Cotton “Conquest” to a class victory in the 1965 500 mile race at Castle Combe. Peter was an acknowledged two-stroke expert, formerly from yhe factories of Ariel and BSA and was involved with the AJS 250 Road Race project. Peter rode a Bultaco-based, 6 speed, 250 Villiers Starmaker powered special to 3rd place in the 1966 Lightweight TT. Conditions were described as 'breezy.' The early lead was disputed between Peter Inchley (Motom) and Ian Johnson (Bone-Itom). But the latter's race was soon over after the machine spluttered to a standstill, the rev counter coupling drive having sheered and pieces dropped into the engine casing which ruined the magneto.
This left the Pearson and lnchley Motom ahead of the field with 87 laps of the 2.71 mile (4.36km) circuit still to be covered. The Motom was slowed by pit signals so that after 15 laps the Italian works machine led by only six seconds from Bill Ivy on the Chisholm Itom.
That lead was just a shade too slim and there after the Motom speeded up, and after 30 laps it led by a full lap and a quarter with the Ivy/Thomas machine second, a lap ahead of the third place bike - another ITOM shared by Phil Latham and Brian Brader.
Next came the eventual winners Geoff Votier and Roy Nicholson who lay fourth - and the fastest bikes were, according to MCN: 'Proving remarkably reliable for the same four had shared the leading positions after completing 15 laps.'
Then the Motom team ran into trouble. After 30 laps they held first, fifth and sixth places, but then the latter machine went out when Ted Broom came off at the Esses, breaking a collarbone - fortunately the only real injury of the day -and the leading bike slowed with minor ignition problems
By the time these had been cured the leaders had dropped back to fifth place, so that after 45 laps the Votier/Nicholson machine had come through to the front ahead of Brian Smith/Roy Righini (Motom), with a Levis-Itom shared by Brian Woolley later a journalist for Classic Bike magazine and

From then on Votier and Nicholson were never headed, although Woolley and Cramp put in a really determined challenge - and were the only other machine to complete the full distance. The Smith/Righini Motom wavered up and down the results sheets before coming through with a strong burst to take third ahead of Bill Ivy and Maurice Thomas on the Chisholm-entered machine.

This, like last year held all of the thrills and excitement of good, competitive racing and endurance. Anyone who has ridden a 50cc motorcycle in a crouched position for 125 miles will affirm that it is no easy job. To finish, whether at the top or a few laps down was an achievement.
