DNF - 1966 125cc Race Isle of Man

Charlie failed to finish in this race due to crashing out a the Creg.

This story outlines Charlie's approach to safety and comfort.

A clip from the "Examiner TT Special 1966

Although Charlie is small in stature it is still difficult to stay squeezed up between the handle bars and seat stop on a 50cc race bike.  3 or 4 laps on a normal circuit is bearable but 113 miles on the Isle of Man can be torture.  With an aching back and the cold, Charlie looked for some support to help him through his racing.  The solution was a pair of ladies roll-on corsets.

Charlie wore these under his leathers and they 'did the trick'  easing the back and keeping warmth where it was needed.  This of course was not seen by all and so no embarrassment.  Come the accident in the 125cc race and Charlie is taken to Noble's hospital.  First they try to cut off the leathers.  Anyone who knows Charlie will appreciate the rather emotive scene of destroying something of value to him.  Next approach is to carefully peel the leathers off.

Surprise Surprise!! There in all their glory are the roll-ons, but still with the suspenders on as Charlie did not see a reason to remove them.

Charlie has lived with this story between a few friends only for years.  Now he shares it with us!
