Records Broken in the 1961 250-mile Chiltern Enduro
The o. h. v. challenge to the two-stroke domination of 50cc racing was mounted by the Italian "Works" Motom machines, at this second annual event but failed gallantly. Only one of the three machines ridden by Jim Pearson and Peter Inchley finished - in third spot- but B Smith with co-rider Roy Righini set a new lap record and led for at leased the first 30 laps, only to retire with a sick motor. P. Wright with co-rider Roy Broom crashed at the Esses without injury after the 30th lap, when they had been in sixth place.
As it was, Votier and Nicholson took their ITOM into the lead before the 45th lap and never lost it, although G. B. Woolley and F. R.Cramp (ITOM-Levis) were only 2m 6.4s behind at the finish and also cracked 50m.p.h. for the race.
Last years close finish was not duplicated this year, however, for 11 laps separated the first and sixth finishers at the end of the gruelling race, in which only 29 out of the 51 starters finished.

A paragraph from a commentary by Dick Wyler. (The Man from Interpol)
I manage to break the monotony of those comparatively slow, seemingly unending circuits. The upgrade to the pits becomes a mountain, and one really has to nurse the gallant little Royal Nord. But after the right-hander the bike streaks happily ahead. Then I enjoy the Esses and shortly after prepare for the climbs and cheerful familiar faces and thumbs-up from the pits. And so on till the end. It was a wonderful day and what impressed me most was the genuine excitement it contained. These "50's" are something to be reckoned with, and I look forward to the next race with anticipation.
